"Khamenei is lying... I also knew his hideout," Trump makes hardline remarks
Iran immediately responds: "Stop your disrespectful tone"
U.S. President Donald Trump made it clear that he would launch airstrikes if Iran attempts to resume the development of nuclear weapons.
At a White House press conference on the 27th (local time), President Trump warned that there would be "no hesitation" and stated that he would order bombings if there were any signs of Iran resuming its nuclear weapons program.
On that day, President Trump added, "Iran is not even thinking about nuclear weapons right now; they are worried about their own survival," and said, "We will have agencies we trust, including the IAEA, inspect Iran."
The previous day, after Iran's Supreme Leader Khamenei claimed "victory over the United States and Israel" and criticized Trump, Trump immediately responded. He said, "Khamenei may be a devout and respected figure, but he must tell the truth," adding, "You are broken, and so is Israel. It was the most appropriate time to end the war."
Trump later posted on the social media platform Truth Social, saying, "I knew where his hideout was, but I prevented the U.S. military from eliminating him. I saved him from a gruesome death," emphasizing that he had left room for negotiation. However, he also revealed that he withdrew consideration of lifting sanctions on Iran following Khamenei's hardline speech.
In response, Iran immediately pushed back. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi countered, "If Trump truly wants negotiations, he must first stop his disrespectful remarks and actions toward the Supreme Leader," and warned, "Our people are not kind to insults."
In political circles, there is analysis that Iran is keeping the possibility of returning to the negotiating table in mind, but is taking a hardline stance in order to shore up public opinion and avoid losing face. Meanwhile, President Trump is highlighting his diplomatic achievements, saying that the airstrikes on Iran's nuclear facilities have prevented further tensions with Israel.
