The Highway Patrol Division 6 of the Gyeongnam Provincial Police Agency will launch a joint intensive crackdown on major traffic law violations by cargo trucks using drones, in cooperation with Korea Expressway Corporation, starting June 30.

This year-round intensive enforcement, beginning on that day, will be carried out using drones at locations such as Jinyeong Service Area, focusing on the Namhae Expressway, where traffic accidents frequently occur.

The crackdown will target major traffic law violations, including: ▲cargo trucks driving on the shoulder ▲failure to wear seat belts ▲violations of designated lane usage.

The Gyeongnam Provincial Police Agency plans to issue fines starting July 28, after a four-week period of public awareness and guidance during which warning notices will be given.

According to the Gyeongnam Provincial Police Agency, of the 180 traffic accidents that occurred on expressways in 2024, cargo truck accidents accounted for 38.33%.

As of June this year, there have been a total of 58 accidents, with cargo truck accidents making up 39.65% of the total, a notably high proportion.

Police drones were mainly used for search and rescue operations in the past, but since last year, they have also been deployed at traffic enforcement sites.

Jang Wonho, head of Division 6, stated, "Traffic law violations by cargo trucks and other vehicles on expressways pose a high risk of major traffic accidents. Through collaboration with related agencies and proactive use of drones for accident prevention and intensive enforcement, we will crack down on traffic law violations and promote these efforts to the public to make expressways safer."
