as Part of Comprehensive Investigation
A group of members of the Naju City Council in Jeonnam, suspected of exchanging money during the process of electing the council chairperson, have been referred to the prosecution.
On June 27, the Anti-Corruption and Economic Crime Investigation Division 1 of the Jeonnam Provincial Police Agency announced that it had referred nine members of the Naju City Council, including Chairperson A, to the prosecution without detention on charges of bribery?both giving and receiving bribes.
They are accused of exchanging sums ranging from 5 million to 10 million won among themselves as compensation during the process of electing the chairperson.
It is reported that the police began their investigation after receiving intelligence that envelopes of cash were distributed among council members during the 9th Naju City Council chairperson election in July 2022. The police subsequently conducted three rounds of searches and seizures, and reportedly secured evidence substantiating the allegations.
Meanwhile, it is reported that some of the council members referred to the prosecution have denied the charges.
