Incheon Line 1 Geomdan Extension Opening Ceremony Held... First Train Runs on the 28th

A ceremony to commemorate the opening of the Incheon Subway Line 1 Geomdan Extension was held on the 27th at Singeomdanjungang Station.

The event was attended by Incheon Mayor Yoo Jungbok, Kang Heeup, Chairman of the Metropolitan Transport Commission at the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, and Democratic Party lawmaker Mo Kyungjong (representing Incheon Seo-gu-byeong), among others. The program included commendations for contributors, commemorative speeches, a ceremony, and a trial ride on the first train.

The Geomdan Extension, with a total project cost of 790 billion won, newly established three stations (Ara Station, Singeomdanjungang Station, and Geomdanhosu Park Station) along a 6.8 km stretch connecting Gyeyang Station, the former terminus of Incheon Line 1, to Geomdan New Town. Construction began in December 2019 and was completed in about five years. The first train will begin operation on the 28th.

Incheon Line 1 began operating between Bakchon Station and Dongmak Station in October 1999, followed by the opening of Gyulhyeon Station in December of the same year and Gyeyang Station in March 2007. In June 2009, six stations in Songdo International City were added, and in December 2020, Songdo Dalbit Chukje Park Station was opened. With the addition of the three Geomdan stations, the line now operates a total of 33 stations.

Incheon City expects that with the opening of the Geomdan Extension, travel time from Geomdan New Town to Gyeyang Station will be reduced by approximately 12 minutes, from about 20 minutes to 8 minutes, thereby improving transportation convenience.

Mayor Yoo stated, "Geomdan is a key growth hub that will lead Incheon's future. Now, citizens can connect to the city center more quickly and conveniently, and children can commute to school more safely. All these changes are not simply the completion of infrastructure, but rather the starting point for connecting citizens' daily lives and driving balanced growth throughout the entire city."
