KICOX Holds Industrial Location Forum
"Overcoming Crisis Through New Industrial Transformation"
Korea Industrial Complex Corporation announced on the 26th that it held the 2nd Industrial Location Forum at Pohang Technopark, focusing on recent trends and future directions in the steel industry.
This forum was organized to address the structural transformation of the global steel industry and changes in the domestic and international environment, as well as to explore strategies for the steel industry's renewed growth.
In the first presentation, Kim Kyunghoon, head of the Strategic Planning Team at Pohang Institute of Industrial Technology Promotion, spoke on the topic of "Strategies to Strengthen the Competitiveness of the Steel Industry." He pointed out that Pohang, the core hub of Korea's steel industry, is experiencing a decline in production due to the industry's crisis, which is having a significant impact on the local economy. To overcome the industrial crisis and promote the development of the steel industry, he presented three key tasks: low-carbon and smart innovation, transition to future new industries, and strengthening of industrial infrastructure.
Kim Byungtae, research fellow at Gyeongbuk Research Institute, continued with a presentation on "Trends and Future Directions of Pohang's Steel Industry." He discussed POSCO's "2050 Carbon Neutrality Roadmap through Hydrogen Reduction Steelmaking Technology" and the establishment of a "Steel and Metal Digital Transformation Demonstration Center," emphasizing that the introduction of new technologies can simultaneously promote carbon neutrality and enhance the competitiveness of the steel industry.
During the comprehensive discussion, Jung Sungmo, professor at the Graduate School of Green Materials at Pohang University of Science and Technology, Park Yonggeun, leader of POSCO's Technology Strategy Office, Park Pyunglyul, advisor at Koryo Steel, and Kim Dokyung, deputy director of the Hydrogen Specialized Complex Promotion Team at Gyeongbuk Technopark, discussed the future direction and support policies for the development of the steel industry.
Professor Jung Sungmo stated, "Referring to Sweden's case of steel industry advancement, our country also needs government support for technology development to increase the added value of the steel industry, including special steel." Leader Park Yonggeun said, "In order to produce hydrogen-reduced steel, it is essential to secure hydrogen and electricity supply along with technology development," adding, "Since this requires enormous costs and investment, government support is necessary."
Jo Joonil, director of the Industrial Complex Policy Research Institute at Korea Industrial Complex Corporation, said, "This forum is meaningful as it serves as a turning point for seeking renewed growth beyond the crisis in the steel industry," and added, "I hope this will become a starting point for the steel industry to overcome the crisis and secure industrial competitiveness through new business transformation."
