Baemin's AI Dispatch System Proven to Enhance Rider Safety and Profitability
Accident Risk for New Riders Reduced by 130%
Findings Presented at Leading European E-Commerce Conference
The Baemin (Baedal Minjok) artificial intelligence (AI) recommended dispatch system has been found to reduce accident risk for Baemin Connect riders by up to 130%, according to research results presented at a European international academic conference.
Woowa Brothers Youth, the company responsible for Baemin's logistics services, announced on the 27th that this research was presented at the international conference 'SCECR 2025 (Statistical Challenges in E-Commerce Research)' held in Cyprus, Europe. Now in its 21st year, SCECR is a venue where leading scholars from around the world present the latest research and discuss interactions among platforms, gig workers, and technology. It is considered the most influential international conference in the field of global e-commerce and digital platform research.
At the conference held on the 24th, Professor Kyung Nayoung of the Department of Information Systems and Analytics at the National University of Singapore presented a paper titled "Trust in Unstable Environments: Safety Management in AI-Based Gig Work," which quantitatively analyzed the empirical effects of the AI recommended dispatch system operated by Baemin.
This study compared and analyzed how the AI recommended dispatch system, which Baemin has been operating since 2020, has affected the safety and profitability of Baemin Connect riders. The AI recommended dispatch system analyzes riders' locations, driving conditions, and travel routes in real time to suggest dispatch assignments. Unlike the previous "battle call" method, where riders competed to select orders, the system proposes customized assignments for each rider, helping them focus on driving by preventing smartphone use while on the road.
Professor Kyung Nayoung's research team compared and verified the data of Baemin Connect riders before and after the introduction of AI dispatch between 2020 and 2023. They found that both the overall safety and profitability of riders improved, with particularly notable effects among new riders. Specifically, the total number of accidents among all riders decreased by 64.3%, and at-fault accidents (caused by riders) dropped by 85.7%. Among new riders, total accidents decreased by 93.3% and at-fault accidents by 130%, resulting in a level of safety where accidents virtually no longer occurred. In terms of rider income, the average monthly earnings for all riders increased by 7.4%, and for new riders by 9.3%, confirming that the AI recommended dispatch technology enhances both safety and profitability.
Professor Kyung Nayoung said, "This is a meaningful case that demonstrates, with data, that AI technology can substantially improve the safety and economic viability of gig workers performing deliveries on platforms. The fact that the effect was even greater for new riders suggests that AI technology can contribute to strengthening the digital-based social safety net."
A representative from Woowa Brothers Youth stated, "Now that we have objectively confirmed through research data that the AI recommended dispatch system reduces rider accident risk, we will continue to advance our delivery system to further improve the working environment for Baemin riders."
