The National Academy of Arts of the Republic of Korea (the Academy) announced on June 26 that it has selected the recipients of the 70th National Academy of Arts Awards: Woo Chanje for literature, Lee Bongyeol for fine arts, and Chae Sangmuk for dance.
The Academy stated that, during its 75th regular general meeting held on the same day, it approved new members as well as the recipients of the National Academy of Arts Awards and the Young Artist Awards.
The Academy, established in 1954, is an institution that honors and supports artists who have made significant contributions to artistic creation.
Since 1955, the year after its founding, the Academy has annually awarded the National Academy of Arts Award (with a prize of 50 million won) to artists who have made outstanding creative achievements in fields such as literature, fine arts, music, theater, film, and dance, thereby contributing significantly to the advancement of the arts. The recipients are selected based on recommendations from over 230 art-related institutions and organizations.

Since 2022, the Academy has also presented the Young Artist Award (with a prize of 25 million won) to artists under the age of 45 (under 40 for the field of music), with the aim of discovering promising young artists and encouraging creative motivation.
The recipients of the 4th National Academy of Arts Young Artist Award are: Choi Jinyoung for literature; Yoon Irang and Park Kwantaek for fine arts; Baek Seokgwang and Min Saerom for theater; and Park Jonghwan for film.
The Academy also elected seven new members this year from various artistic fields: Lee Soongwon, an honorary professor at Seoul Women’s University and literary critic; Oh Yonggil, an honorary professor at Ewha Womans University and painter; Jung Haejo, an honorary professor at Paichai University and craftsman; Kim Yangdong, a distinguished professor at Keimyung University and calligrapher; Lee Geonyong, an honorary professor at Korea National University of Arts and composer; Han Taesook, theater director; and Jang Mihui, film actress. Including these seven new members approved at this regular general meeting, the Academy will now have a total of 82 members, together with the 75 existing members.
New members are selected from among those with more than 30 years of artistic career, based on recommendations from over 230 art-related institutions and organizations, in fields such as literature, fine arts, music, theater, film, and dance.
