The Gyeonggi Provincial Government will conduct safety inspections on 524 spires in the province by August to prepare for strong winds and typhoons.
This inspection targets 524 spires that are over 4 meters tall and have been in place for more than 20 years. In consideration of recent climate changes, which have increased the frequency of strong winds, the criteria for selecting inspection targets have been significantly strengthened.
Last year, Gyeonggi Province, together with city and county governments, conducted safety inspections on 111 spires that were less than 8 meters tall and had been in place for more than 30 years.
The main inspection items include checking for shaking of the structure, the installation status of support structures and anchor bolts, and the corrosion status of major structural components.
If any risk factors are identified during the inspection, immediate safety measures will be taken on site. For issues that cannot be addressed immediately, administrative actions such as corrective orders will be implemented. In addition, to ensure ongoing safety management of spires based on inspection results, the province plans to pursue improvements to relevant laws and regulations by reflecting suggestions for institutional improvements from city and county governments.
Park Jonggeun, Director of Architectural Policy at Gyeonggi Province, stated, "This inspection will focus on facilities that are vulnerable to strong winds and similar hazards by carefully selecting inspection targets, and through these efforts, we will work to ensure the safety of our residents."
