Seongnam City to Reapply for Preliminary Feasibility Study on Subway Line 8 Pangyo Extension Project

Scheduled to Apply as a Candidate Project for the Preliminary Feasibility Study in September

Seongnam City in Gyeonggi Province (Mayor: Shin Sangjin) announced on June 26 that it plans to reapply for the previously withdrawn 'Subway Line 8 Pangyo Extension Project' as a candidate for the preliminary feasibility study in September, after securing additional economic feasibility (B/C).

Initially, Seongnam City had planned to apply in June of this year, but adjusted the application timing to September, taking into account the upcoming KTDB (National Transport Database) update scheduled for the second half of the year, as well as the timing for reflecting demand from development plans in Baekhyeon MICE in Jeongja-dong and areas around the Gyeonggang Line and Wolpan Line.

The Subway Line 8 Pangyo Extension Project aims to extend the 3.78 km section from Moran Station, the current terminus of Line 8, to Pangyo Station. In the 2023 preliminary feasibility study, the project was withdrawn as some development plans had not reached the stage where their demand could be reflected, and thus failed to secure sufficient economic feasibility (B/C).

In response, Seongnam City plans to hold a community briefing session for local residents next week to share the project's progress, strategies for improving economic feasibility, and future plans, thereby communicating with the local community.

If the project passes the preliminary feasibility study, the city will be able to secure 29.35 billion won in national funding, which is 60% of the total project cost of 48.91 billion won.

A Seongnam City official stated, "Since railway projects involve a massive budget, passing the preliminary feasibility study is essential," adding, "We will do our utmost to secure economic feasibility to enhance transportation convenience for citizens."
