Seocho District Aims to Be the Mecca of Judicial Justice

Seocho District in Seoul is set to emerge as a hub for international law. On June 26, Seocho District announced that it held the opening ceremony for "HCCH Asia-Pacific Week Seoul 2025" at Sebitseom on June 25.


This event is taking place from June 25 to 27, and is co-hosted by the Hague Conference on Private International Law (HCCH), the Ministry of Justice, the Judicial Policy Research Institute, the Ministry of Health and Welfare, the National Center for the Rights of the Child, the International Academy of Comparative Law, the Korea Institute of Criminology and Justice, and Seocho District.

At the opening ceremony, Jeon Seongsu, Mayor of Seocho District, stated, "Seocho District is a legal cluster where key judicial institutions such as the Supreme Court, the Supreme Prosecutors’ Office, and the Korean Bar Association are concentrated. We aim to become the mecca of judicial justice in the Asia-Pacific region, taking The Hague as our role model."


On the final day of the event, June 27, Mayor Jeon will personally give a presentation outlining Seocho District’s vision to establish the "Asia-Pacific Judicial Justice Hub" as a center for international law, which is a key initiative for the district.


The district plans to enhance legal accessibility through domestic and international academic conferences and educational and cultural programs. By leveraging Seocho’s legal infrastructure, it aims to create cultural and economic value and attract international legal organizations, positioning itself as the center of judicial justice in the Asia-Pacific region. In addition, future development strategies will be presented, including fostering the legal tech industry based on artificial intelligence (AI), and promoting the MICE industry that integrates law, tourism, and culture.


The opening ceremony was attended by more than 150 participants, including delegations from major Asia-Pacific countries, representatives from international organizations, and legal experts. They reviewed the implementation status of key HCCH conventions and discussed the future direction of international judicial cooperation. The event also provided an opportunity to share experiences from each country and explore practical avenues for cooperation.


Mayor Jeon stated, "Taking this HCCH Asia-Pacific Week as an opportunity, we will strengthen cooperation with relevant organizations such as the Ministry of Justice and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, continue to attract international events, and promote judicial culture exchange programs. We will do our utmost to ensure that the Asia-Pacific Judicial Justice Hub becomes a true legal hub."
