'Knife dance performer' Tony Finau (USA) has withdrawn from the tournament.
The PGA Tour announced on June 25 (local time) that Finau notified the organizers of his withdrawal one day before the start of the Rocket Classic. Joseph Bramlett (USA), who was on the waiting list, received Finau's spot in the field. Although the reason for Finau's withdrawal was not disclosed, his decision to skip the tournament has drawn attention as it is considered unusual.
This year, Finau has participated in 19 tournaments but has finished in the top 10 only once, indicating that his performance is not what it used to be. His world ranking, which once climbed as high as ninth, has dropped to 44th. He has also slipped to 19th in the Ryder Cup points ranking, making it difficult for him to qualify automatically. In November last year, Finau underwent surgery to remove cartilage from his left knee.
Standing at 193cm and weighing 90kg, Finau is known for his impressive physique and powerful long drives. His ancestors are from Samoa, an island nation in the South Pacific, and he has a unique background, having performed knife dances as a child to help support his family. He has recorded six career wins on the PGA Tour.
