Goyang City Receives Positive Evaluation from 77.4% of Citizens on Municipal Administration
Emphasis on Proactive Measures for Flood-Prone Areas
Plans to Consider Transportation Infrastructure in New Towns and Aging Planned Cities
On June 25, Donghwan Lee, Mayor of Goyang Special City, reviewed major tasks and event plans for July and delivered remarks regarding the direction of the 8th popularly elected municipal administration at an executive meeting held at Baekseok Annex.
Mayor Lee stated, "According to a recent public opinion survey conducted to mark the third anniversary of the 8th popularly elected administration, 77.4% of citizens gave a positive assessment of the city’s governance." He added, "I believe that the expansion of transportation networks, which has ushered in the era of a 30-minute commute within the Seoul metropolitan area, the restoration of urban streams and green spaces, the establishment of a foundation for high-tech industries, and the attraction of large-scale performances?changes that citizens can truly feel?have all contributed to this positive evaluation."
He further urged, "I ask that all departments steadfastly support city administration so that we can steadily accomplish key tasks, including our top priority pledges such as the designation of an economic free zone."
In particular, regarding recent road flooding caused by localized torrential downpours, he stressed, "It is important to take proactive measures, including thorough inspections and dredging in areas prone to frequent flooding." He instructed, "Continuously inspect vulnerable spots such as storm drains and drainage channels, and eliminate risk factors in advance to create an urban environment where citizens can live with peace of mind."
He also addressed Goyang’s bicycle road policy, noting, "Currently, Goyang’s bicycle paths span approximately 442 kilometers and are continuously expanding according to development plans." He requested, "Please thoroughly inspect the entire network so that citizens can use it safely without disconnections or hazards."
Regarding youth policy, he emphasized the need for effectiveness. Mayor Lee said, "With the youth unemployment rate still high, there is an urgent need for practical employment linkage programs." He instructed, "Please conduct a comprehensive review of all youth policies currently operated by each department and improve them to strengthen job competency development and employment linkage, so that they can provide tangible support."
He also mentioned the recent reappearance of 'Lovebug' in some areas, stating, "Although Lovebug is a beneficial insect, not a pest, active measures are necessary if it causes inconvenience to citizens." He directed, "Closely monitor the situation to prevent a recurrence of the controversy from two years ago, and take preemptive action if needed."
Finally, regarding urban development policies such as the maintenance of aging planned cities, Mayor Lee emphasized, "When developing new towns that will attract large populations and redeveloping aging urban areas, please ensure that urban infrastructure such as transportation is fully considered, and pursue development that harmonizes with the city’s aesthetics."
Meanwhile, the meeting included a review of major tasks and event plans scheduled for July, such as the Resident Autonomy Best Practices Festival, the 2025 Goyang Social Economy Festa, the Seed Climate Environment School operation, and the Goyang Track King Selection Competition.
