SUVs Like Tucson and Sportage Remain Popular
Strong Sales for Electric Vehicles EV3 and Casper Electric
Hyundai Motor and Kia sold 88,491 vehicles in the European market last month, a 4.0% decrease compared to the same month last year.
According to the European Automobile Manufacturers' Association (ACEA) on June 25, Hyundai Motor and Kia sold 88,491 vehicles in the European market in May, down 4.0% from the same month last year. Hyundai Motor recorded 45,526 units, a 2.5% decrease year-on-year, while Kia sold 42,965 units, down 5.6%.
The total size of the European market in May was 1,113,194 units, a 1.9% increase compared to the previous year. As a result, Hyundai Motor and Kia's market share was calculated at 7.9%, a 0.5 percentage point decrease from the previous year. Hyundai Motor's share was 4.1%, down 0.2 percentage points, and Kia's was 3.9%, down 0.3 percentage points.
Hyundai Motor and Kia adopted a strategy to respond to changing demand by increasing the proportion of eco-friendly vehicles such as hybrids and electric vehicles in their sales.
The main model for Hyundai Motor was the mid-size SUV Tucson, with a total of 10,300 units sold: 4,068 hybrid (HEV), 4,046 internal combustion engine, and 2,186 plug-in hybrid (PHEV) units. The Kona followed, with 7,174 units sold, consisting of 3,381 HEV, 2,416 EV, and 1,377 internal combustion engine models. The i10 recorded sales of 4,712 units.
Among major eco-friendly vehicles, the Tucson also performed well with 6,254 units of HEV and PHEV models sold. The Kona followed with 5,797 units, then the Inster (Casper Electric) with 2,928 units, and the Ioniq 5 with 1,387 units. Of these, the Ioniq 5 N accounted for 123 units.
For Kia, the Sportage was the most popular model, with total sales of 11,553 units. The Ceed followed with 8,030 units (5,794 standard models and 2,236 CUVs), and the Morning with 5,767 units. In the eco-friendly segment, the electric SUV 'EV3' achieved strong sales with 5,310 units sold. The Niro recorded total sales of 3,961 units, including 3,183 HEV and PHEV models and 778 EV models. The EV6 sold 1,389 units.
Looking at the cumulative total from January to May, Hyundai Motor and Kia sold a combined total of 445,569 vehicles in the European market, a 3.5% decrease compared to the same period last year. Hyundai Motor recorded 219,509 units, down 3.9%, and Kia sold 226,060 units, down 3.1%. During the same period, the total size of the European market was 5,572,458 units, an increase of 0.1%. Hyundai Motor and Kia's market share was 8.0%, down 0.3 percentage points from the previous year, with Hyundai Motor at 3.9% and Kia at 4.1%.
