Council Member Baek stated, "In this year's presidential election, Gwangju recorded a voter turnout of 83.9% and Jeonnam 83.6%, ranking first and second nationwide. The vote share reached 85.87% in Jeonnam and 84.77% in Gwangju, demonstrating overwhelming support. Having made a decisive contribution to the launch of the new government with the highest voter turnout and vote share in the country, the Lee Jae Myung government must respond to the demand for a corresponding level of commitment and action from the government."
He continued, "Although Honam has played a decisive role in the establishment of democratic governments every time, it has been neglected in terms of government support projects. During the Yoon Suk Yeol administration, projects that actually reflected Honam-related pledges in the budget accounted for less than 1%. The population of Gwangju has fallen below 1.4 million for the first time in 21 years, and as a region suffering from unbalanced development, Honam is experiencing a vicious cycle of youth and working-age population outflow, resulting in a loss of vitality and facing the risk of extinction," he emphasized.
He further stated, "As President Lee Jae Myung instructed the relocation of the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries to Busan at his first Cabinet meeting, expectations are rising for the prompt implementation of Honam-related pledges. Whether the National Policy Planning Committee and central government ministries reflect these pledges in their early-term national agendas will be a critical turning point for securing Honam's future growth engines. We urge the government to swiftly implement Honam pledges to achieve balanced regional development and prevent further population outflow."
