Dialogue with Over 100 Gwangju and Jeonnam Residents
"Strengthening Communication, a Government That Works"
On June 25, President Lee Jae Myung is holding a 'Gwangju Citizens and Jeonnam Residents Town Hall Meeting' at the National Asia Culture Center in Gwangju, engaging in discussions with around 100 local residents. The presidential office explained, "The focus of this event is on communication with ordinary residents rather than political figures."

This visit marks President Lee's first trip to Honam, the stronghold of the Democratic Party of Korea, since taking office. It is seen as significant because, after deciding not to attend the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) summit, he filled his schedule with a visit to Honam. This move is interpreted as an expression of gratitude to a region that gave him over 80% support during the presidential election and as an effort to listen to public sentiment directly.
Following his recent attendance at the Ulsan Data Center opening ceremony and encouragement of the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries' relocation to Busan, President Lee's visit to Honam is being interpreted by some as an attempt to highlight a message of integration between Yeongnam and Honam. Analysts also see this as an extension of President Lee's consistent emphasis on strengthening communication.
At the town hall meeting, key regional issues such as the relocation of the military airport and the expansion of artificial intelligence infrastructure are expected to be major agenda items. The event will be broadcast live nationwide. The presidential office is also reportedly considering holding a press conference on July 3 to mark the 30th day of President Lee's term.
