Four Sessions on June 28-29 and July 5-6
Jeonju City in North Jeolla Province will host the "Jeonju Buseonggil Treasure Hunt Great Adventure," a historical and cultural experience program set against the backdrop of Jeonju Buseonggil, over four sessions on June 28?29 and July 5?6.
According to the city on June 25, Jeonju Buseong Fortress once surrounded the downtown area of Jeonju, but after being demolished by the Japanese in 1910, only Pungnammun Gate remains, and even its traces have now become faint.
In response, the city planned this program to share the historical significance of Jeonju Buseong Fortress?which has long embodied the history and culture of Jeonju as the ancestral home of the Joseon Dynasty and the center of the Honam region?with citizens, and to provide an opportunity to rediscover the historical value and charm of Jeonju’s original downtown by walking along the vanished fortress path.
This program is a participatory historical tourism content that connects the past and present, as citizens and tourists themselves walk along the lost paths of Jeonju Buseong Fortress. Using a mobile application developed by the city, participants collect approximately 500 digital stamps hidden throughout Jeonju Buseonggil within a set time, naturally exploring Jeonju’s historical landmarks in the process.
In addition to the stamp collection feature, the app offers a variety of functions, including GPS-based tag games, guided exploration courses, and history quizzes, making it easy and enjoyable for anyone to participate.
The treasure hunt course is designed in connection with Jeonju’s future heritage sites, such as Jeonju Hanok Village, Cinema Street, and Chinatown Street. The course itself is intended to provide an experience where the path becomes a living history museum.
In particular, at each location where the four main gates of Jeonju Buseong Fortress once stood, participants can listen to vivid historical explanations delivered by actors portraying historical figures. Through stories unfolding at the very sites where Jeonju Buseong Fortress stood until about 110 years ago, the program aims to highlight Jeonju’s historical value and offer a new perspective for enjoying the region.
Participants who complete the treasure hunt can receive a completion certificate, commemorative gifts, and special prizes at the information center, depending on the number of stamps collected. A special prize will be awarded to the participant who collects the most stamps, and all participants will receive a completion certificate and a commemorative gift.
Anyone can participate in this event through advance reservation or on-site registration. The city plans to develop this program into a year-round flagship historical tourism content, rather than a one-time experience event.
No Eunyoung, Director of Culture, Sports and Tourism at Jeonju City, stated, "'The Jeonju Buseonggil Treasure Hunt Great Adventure' goes beyond a simple experience; it is a participatory historical tourism content in which citizens walk and revive Jeonju’s history themselves. We plan to continue discovering and expanding Jeonju Buseonggil as a representative historical and cultural resource."
