Gyeonggi Province Selects 12 Sites for Old Downtown Revitalization

Gyeonggi Province has selected 12 locations within the province, including Mabuk-dong in Yongin City, as target sites for revitalizing old downtown areas.

On June 25, Gyeonggi Province announced that it has finalized the target sites for the "The Dream Regeneration Project," which encourages resident communities to propose diverse ideas tailored to local conditions. The selected sites are divided into three categories: foundation building stage, project implementation stage, and sustainable operation stage.

First, the sites selected for the foundation building stage are Mabuk-dong in Yongin City, Sincheon-dong in Siheung City, Naeson-dong in Uiwang City, Janghowon-eup in Icheon City, Howon-dong in Uijeongbu City, Soyo-dong in Dongducheon City, and Cheongpyeong-myeon in Gapyeong County, totaling seven locations. The sites in the project implementation stage are Seongnam-dong in Anseong City and Chang-dong in Yeoju City, totaling two locations. The sites in the sustainable operation stage are Buksoo-dong in Suwon City, Daebubuk-dong in Ansan City, and Gwangmyeong 3-dong in Gwangmyeong City, totaling three locations.

Looking at the main details of the projects selected for each stage, Naeson-dong in Uiwang City, which is in the foundation building stage, plans to uniquely improve the village landscape by supporting repairs for aging low-rise residential areas and renovating alleyways. The town will also pilot a resident-led local management service by introducing a town management function.

In the project implementation stage, Seongnam-dong in Anseong City will create a complex cultural space that combines exhibition, experience, and rest functions by utilizing old local assets. The project also aims to revitalize the old downtown commercial district by improving the alleyway environment.

In the sustainable operation stage, Daebubuk-dong in Ansan City is expected to become a representative model by installing and operating a solar power plant on the rooftop of an existing urban regeneration hub facility, led by residents. This will generate profit, which will serve as a foundation for securing sustainability in local management, while also contributing to the realization of carbon neutrality.

From January to April, Gyeonggi Province conducted three rounds of expert consulting sessions for the regions participating in the project call.

Gyeonggi Province also plans to actively support regions that were not selected this time by providing ongoing consulting to enhance the completeness and feasibility of their plans.

Kim Taesu, Director of Urban Regeneration at Gyeonggi Province, stated, "Through this project call, we have selected innovative and actionable urban regeneration projects that reflect the unique conditions and voices of each community. We will continue to provide systematic support throughout all stages of the projects so that resident-led and locally tailored urban regeneration can take root."

Meanwhile, the Gyeonggi The Dream Regeneration Project has selected and actively promoted 18 projects in 15 cities and counties as of last year.
