Emphasis on Legal Updates and Data Sovereignty for Vulnerable Groups

The National Policy Planning Committee, which serves as the transition team for President Lee Jaemyung, announced on the afternoon of June 24 that it had received a business report from the Personal Information Protection Commission. The meeting was attended by Lee Haesik, head of the Political and Administrative Division, division members, and Lee Jeongryeol, Secretary General of the Personal Information Protection Commission.

During the briefing, planning and expert committee members urged swift action to alleviate public anxiety caused by the SK Telecom personal information leak and called for strong measures to prevent recurrence. They also emphasized the need to update personal information laws in the era of AI, strengthen individuals’ rights to self-determination, and enhance efforts to protect personal information in the use of behavioral data for personalized advertising.


There was also discussion on the implementation of pledges under the jurisdiction of the Personal Information Protection Commission. The Commission outlined plans including: establishing a safe foundation for personal information use to help South Korea become one of the world’s top three AI powers; responding to new privacy threats such as deepfakes; guaranteeing data sovereignty for digitally vulnerable groups; implementing a prevention-focused personal information protection system; and expanding MyData initiatives across all sectors.


Lee Haesik, head of the Political and Administrative Division, stated, "In the era of AI, it is more important than ever to uphold the non-negotiable value of personal information protection," and urged efforts to resolve conflicts between industrial development in the AI era and the protection of personal information.
