Strengthening Traffic and Pedestrian Safety
in Response to Increasing Tourist Numbers
Jongno District in Seoul will conduct a focused "special crackdown on illegal parking and stopping" in the areas around Cheong Wa Dae and Gyeongbokgung Palace until July 31. This measure comes in response to a significant increase in tourists and related civil complaints, as the end date for tours of Cheong Wa Dae (July 31) and the closing of the Ron Mueck exhibition at the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art (July 13) approach.
Jongno District's joint campaign to eradicate illegal parking and stopping held on the 21st of last month. Provided by Jongno District.
The special crackdown will target the areas around the Cheong Wa Dae fountain, Sarangchae, Mugunghwa Hill, and the vicinity of the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art on the east side of Gyeongbokgung Palace. The district has organized a special enforcement team to alleviate traffic congestion and ensure pedestrian safety, and will conduct constant monitoring on both weekdays and weekends using closed-circuit (CC) TV vehicles. If a complaint regarding illegal parking or stopping is received, immediate enforcement and towing will be carried out.
Jongno District plans to gradually strengthen the intensity of enforcement to ensure the safety of citizens and tourists, and will also run a campaign to eradicate illegal parking and stopping targeting tourists and tour buses. Last month, a joint campaign was held in cooperation with Jongno Police Station, Seoul Metropolitan Government, Cheong Wa Dae Foundation, and the National Folk Museum of Korea.
The district is producing and distributing parking location guides for tour bus drivers, not only within Jongno but also covering areas inside and outside the four main gates of Seoul, including Jung District, Yongsan District, and Mapo District. In addition, the district is actively promoting the illegal parking text alert service (the "Whistle" app), so that even in cases of mistakes or unavoidable circumstances, drivers can receive immediate notifications via the app and move their vehicles promptly.
Jongno District stated, "We will make every effort to resolve the issue of illegal parking and stopping so that both citizens and tourists can enjoy the history and culture of Jongno and continue their daily lives in a safe and pleasant environment."
