First Nationwide Implementation of Military Personnel Safety Insurance
Continued Operation This Year to Prepare for Heavy Rain
A Total of 1,567 Military Personnel Supported for Insurance Enrollment Last Year
Gyeonggi Province announced on the 25th that it will continue the "Disaster Recovery Support Military Personnel Injury Insurance Subscription Support Project," which was implemented for the first time in the country, into 2025.
With this, the institutional guarantee of safety for military personnel deployed to disaster recovery sites will continue this year, following 2024.
This project is operated in a way that Gyeonggi Province fully covers the insurance premiums so that military personnel mobilized to disaster recovery sites in the province?such as those affected by floods, heavy snow, and accidents?can be protected from unexpected accidents during their duties.
Gyeonggi Province raised the need for measures to ensure the safety of military personnel in the wake of the death of Marine Corps Corporal Chae in July 2023, and in May 2024, enacted the "Gyeonggi Province Disaster Recovery Support Military Personnel Safety Assurance and Support Ordinance" for the first time in the country.
Subsequently, the province set a one-year insurance period from June 2024 to June 2025, signed injury insurance contracts for a total of 3,200 people, and executed a project budget of 153.34 million won (47,920 won per person in insurance premiums).
Gyeonggi Province receives information on the mobilization status of military personnel from cities and counties and supports insurance enrollment based on the actual number of personnel deployed. From June 2024 to April 2025, the province supported insurance enrollment for a total of 1,567 military personnel. These individuals were deployed for flood recovery, heavy snow damage restoration, and the response to the Pocheon fighter jet misfire accident in six cities and counties: Pyeongtaek, Paju, Icheon, Yeoju, Pocheon, and Yangju.
Through the conclusion of the 2025 insurance contract, Gyeonggi Province plans to ensure the continuity and stability of the project, thereby continuing to guarantee the safety of military personnel mobilized in the event of future disasters.
Jung Changseop, the Gyeonggi Province Military Cooperation Officer, stated, "It is our responsibility to ensure that military personnel dedicated to disaster recovery sites can carry out their duties with peace of mind," and added, "We will continue to strengthen institutional measures for the safety and welfare of military personnel."
Meanwhile, this project, which Gyeonggi Province pioneered, is now spreading nationwide. Not only metropolitan governments such as North Jeolla Province and North Chungcheong Province, but also basic local governments such as Gunpo, Namyangju, Goyang, Uiwang, Gapyeong, Icheon, and Imsil are enacting similar ordinances to join efforts to ensure the safety of military personnel.
Gyeonggi Province monitors the mobilization status of military personnel for disaster recovery by city and county each month, and in February, held a meeting with officials from cities, counties, and military units to listen to operational difficulties and seek improvement measures.
