Linked with the National Industrial Complex for Nuclear Hydrogen
Presenting an Optimized Hydrogen City Model
Aiming to Become Korea's Leading Hydrogen City
400 Billion KRW to Be Invested by 2028
On June 23, Uljin County in North Gyeongsang Province held a kickoff meeting for the "Uljin County Hydrogen City Development Project Master Plan Service," aimed at establishing a sustainable hydrogen city.
The kickoff meeting was attended by over 20 participants, including County Governor Son Byeongbok, the president of the East Coast Industry Research Institute, officials from North Gyeongsang Province and Uljin County, and researchers from the East Coast Industry Research Institute. The event proceeded with a report on the commencement of the service, followed by expert consultations and discussions.
Uljin County, which operates the largest number of nuclear power plants in the world (eight in operation and two under construction), is considered the optimal location for the creation of a hydrogen city utilizing nuclear clean hydrogen, in conjunction with the National Industrial Complex for Nuclear Hydrogen. Based on these regional characteristics, Uljin was selected in September 2024 as a local government for the third phase of the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport's Hydrogen City Development Project.
The hydrogen city development project will be implemented with a total budget of 40 billion KRW (including 20 billion KRW in national funding) by 2028.
The main projects include: ▲ construction of hydrogen production facilities ▲ establishment of infrastructure such as hydrogen pipelines ▲ introduction of hydrogen equipment for building heat supply ▲ supply of hydrogen buses ▲ establishment of an integrated hydrogen safety management center, as well as hydrogen experience-based community welfare facilities and a hydrogen promotion center.
The Nexus Urban Lab Consortium (composed of four companies: Nexus Urban Lab, Hyundai Engineering & Construction, Korea Engineering Consultants Corporation, and Pohang Technopark), which was selected as the lead agency for this master plan service, plans to present a differentiated hydrogen city model that maximizes connectivity with the National Industrial Complex for Nuclear Hydrogen through its kickoff report.
County Governor Son Byeongbok stated, "Through the establishment of this master plan, I hope to complete a hydrogen city model utilizing nuclear clean hydrogen, allowing residents to experience hydrogen firsthand and ensuring the creation of a safe hydrogen city. Through the Uljin National Industrial Complex for Nuclear Hydrogen and the hydrogen city development project, we will create high-quality jobs, revitalize the local economy, and make Uljin a better place to live where both residents and businesses can thrive together."
