Governor Dongyeon Kim of Gyeonggi Province pledged on the first anniversary of the Hwaseong Aricell battery factory fire tragedy on the 24th, "We will remember so that such a tragedy never happens again."
On this day, Governor Kim recalled the events of that time in a message posted on his social networking service (SNS) to mark the first anniversary of the Aricell tragedy, saying, "I vividly remember the scene I rushed to after hearing the news of the fire, the flames I saw from the rooftop of the adjacent building, and the urgent voices coming through the radio."
He continued, "On this day one year ago, 23 people did not return, and the tragedy is not yet over." He added, "Gyeonggi Province provided emergency living expenses to the foreign bereaved families,
and we made great efforts to embrace migrant workers as our neighbors and to change the standards and systems for disaster response."
However, Governor Kim remarked, "I still feel a deep sense of regret," and questioned, "Has everything really changed? Was it really enough? Today, I ask again."
He went on to say, "To ensure that such a tragedy never happens again, I will remember and stand together until the end."
