A man in his 60s died after crashing his car into a store where his ex-girlfriend works, fleeing the scene, and then confronting police before jumping from a building.
According to Dangjin Police Station on June 24, Mr. A, a man in his 60s, drove his car into a hair salon on the first floor of a commercial building in the area at around 9:29 a.m. the previous day. Ms. B, who was alone preparing to open the business, narrowly escaped. However, the car caught fire, and the flames spread to part of the building, resulting in property damage estimated at approximately 28 million won (according to fire authorities).
After arriving at the scene, police tracked Mr. A's movements using witness statements and closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage, following his escape while his body was on fire. At around 2:00 p.m. the same day, they found Mr. A hiding on the fourth floor of a nearby building. When Mr. A saw the police coming up the stairs, he resisted violently by throwing water bottles and other objects, and reportedly acted as if he might jump, blocking the officers from approaching.
Believing that Mr. A might jump from the building, police requested the fire authorities to set up an air mat. However, as the rescue team was installing the air mat in response to the police's request for assistance, Mr. A suddenly jumped. This occurred about 10 minutes into the standoff with police. Mr. A was transported to a nearby hospital with breathing but no consciousness, but ultimately died.
During the investigation, police confirmed that Ms. B, an employee at the hair salon on the first floor, was associated with Mr. A. Ms. B told police, "It is true that I dated Mr. A for about a year, but I broke up with him a month ago because he was overly possessive."
Meanwhile, as Mr. A is now deceased, the case will be closed without prosecution.
