Gyeonggi Province Maintains Over 790,000 Rainwater Drains Ahead of Rainy Season

Gyeonggi Province has completed maintenance on approximately 793,000 rainwater drains, accounting for 88% of the more than 900,000 drains across the province, ahead of the rainy season.

Gyeonggi Province announced on the 24th that, as of the 20th, it had inspected and dredged about 793,000 rainwater drains?88% of the total 900,000 in the province?while operating the "Rainwater Drain Intensive Maintenance Week" until the 27th of this month to prepare for heavy summer rainfall and maintain basic disaster prevention facilities.

This maintenance is a proactive measure in response to the recent climate crisis, which has led to frequent localized torrential downpours, and aims to prevent flooding in vulnerable areas such as semi-basement homes during the summer.

Gyeonggi Province is mobilizing all disaster prevention resources, including city and county government staff, voluntary disaster prevention teams, village patrols, and dredging contractors, to carry out inspections.

In particular, the province is reorganizing the status of rainwater drains through a comprehensive reinvestigation by each city and county, and prioritizing maintenance in areas near households that have suffered flood damage and within flood trace zones. Of the 35,000 rainwater drains in designated "priority sewer maintenance management areas" where flooding is frequent or likely, about 29,000 have been completed.

Choo Daeun, head of Gyeonggi Province's Natural Disaster Division, said, "We plan to complete the inspection and maintenance of rainwater drains in remaining flood-prone areas by the end of June. During the storm and flood season, rainwater drains require frequent maintenance and inspection due to the inflow of debris caused by rainfall. We will do our utmost to prevent flood damage through continuous monitoring and regular maintenance and inspection in cooperation with city and county governments."
