The scope of the project includes identifying the current status of areas in Gwangju City that are prone to frequent flooding, conducting field surveys, and researching policies to prevent urban flooding. The ultimate goal is to establish an ordinance to promote water circulation for the prevention of urban flooding.
Departments related to urban flooding, such as the Disaster Safety Division, Road Management Division, and Waterworks Division, participated in the kickoff meeting. Together with the research council members, they discussed the direction of the project. They reviewed Gwangju City's past flood records and identified the opening of the Paldang Dam floodgates and issues with permeable pavement as the main causes. There was also an active discussion on the effectiveness of retention tanks in each building, as well as matters related to national public project applications.
In particular, the research group emphasized that, from a long-term perspective, the durability and maintenance costs of various facilities installed to prevent urban flooding must be considered. The group requested that the study be conducted in the right direction.
This research project involves a total of eight council members, including Representative Councilor Joo Imrok, Noh Youngjun, Oh Hyunju, Wang Junghoon, Lee Juhun, Cho Yeran, Choi Seoyoon, and Heo Kyunghaeng. The group plans to hold seminars with relevant departments and benchmark other cities and counties by the end of November this year.
