June 30 to July 6 at Mundong Breakwater
Exhibitions, Hands-on Experiences, and Local Specialty Sales
Gijang-gun (Governor Jeong Jongbok) announced on June 24 that 'Moon Oseong WEEK' will be held for one week from June 30 to July 6 in the area around Mundong Breakwater in Ilgwang-eup.
This event is part of the Mundong Living Zone Fishing Village New Vitality Promotion Project in Gijang-gun. It is designed to introduce the daily life and culture of the five so-called 'Moon Oseong' villages?Mundong, Munjung, Chilam, Sinpyeong, and Dongbaek?and to promote the revitalization of fishing villages. The event was planned to coincide with the opening of the Mundong Direct Sales Center in order to increase local interest and participation.
During the event, an exhibition titled 'VIEW: Moon Oseong' will take place on the first floor of the Mundong Haenyeo Welfare Center, showcasing records and observations of the lives in these five villages. The exhibition utilizes a space formerly used as a fishermen's workplace to express the daily life of these semi-farming, semi-fishing villages in various ways.
On July 4, a humanities program called 'Original Ingredient Table: The Table Grown by Moon Oseong,' focusing on local specialties such as kelp, seaweed, and green onions, will be held in two sessions. On the same day, starting at 4 p.m., the '2025 Linker Organization Networking Day' will bring together linker organizations, which play a key role in village revitalization, for networking and exchange.
On July 5 and 6, one-day experience programs will be available, including the 'Sea Plant Drawing Class,' where participants can draw coastal plants themselves, and the 'Moon Oseong Wave Healing Class,' which offers a new way to walk along the Mundong Breakwater.
In addition, from July 4 to 6, a sales booth operated by local residents will sell specialty products they have harvested themselves, and a product giveaway event will be offered to on-site buyers. All programs are free of charge, and some experience programs require advance registration. Detailed information can be found on the Mundong Field Office's Instagram and blog.
Governor Jeong Jongbok stated, "I hope Moon Oseong WEEK will serve as an opportunity to shed new light on the region's marine culture and community," and added, "We will actively support the development of the Mundong Living Zone into a vibrant and sustainable fishing village."
The Mundong Living Zone in Gijang-gun was finally selected in 2023 for Type 2, 'Fishing Village Living Platform Development,' of the Fishing Village New Vitality Promotion Project led by the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries, and is currently pursuing various projects under the vision of 'Mundong Sea Garden of Recovery and Coexistence.'
