The West Sea Regional Coast Guard Agency announced on the 24th that it held the "2025 Typhoon Invasion Preparedness Wide-Area Marine Search and Rescue Technology Committee" to support marine search and rescue operations quickly and effectively.
The Wide-Area Marine Search and Rescue Technology Committee is composed of public officials and civilian experts from 17 related organizations, including the West Sea Regional Coast Guard Agency, Gwangju Regional Meteorological Administration, Air Force 1st Fighter Wing, and the Korea Maritime Rescue and Salvage Association Jeonnam and Jeonbuk branches, in order to strengthen the cooperation system among the public, private, and military sectors.
During this meeting, participants reviewed the summer weather outlook, examined systems for preventing and responding to marine accidents in preparation for typhoons, and discussed ways for each related organization to cooperate in order to minimize typhoon damage this year.
In particular, as the risk of typhoons has increased due to climate change, the discussion focused on the following: safety management of anchored vessels in shelter areas, prevention of unauthorized vessel departures before the lifting of weather advisories, and safety management measures for coastal waters.
Meanwhile, over the past five years (2020-2024), there have been a total of seven vessel accidents caused by typhoons in the southwestern sea area under the jurisdiction of the West Sea Regional Coast Guard Agency, but there were no casualties.
