On the morning of June 24, during the 4th plenary session of the 359th regular meeting, Chungnam Provincial Council member Gu Hyungseo (Cheonan 4, Democratic Party of Korea) delivered a five-minute speech proposing that Chungnam Province actively consider establishing or integrating relevant departments in preparation for the new government's establishment of the Ministry of Climate and Energy.
Gu emphasized, "Recently, as the central government has placed greater importance on responding to the climate crisis and implementing energy transition policies, the establishment of the Ministry of Climate and Energy is now being actively discussed," adding, "Chungnam, as a key hub for South Korea's energy industry, must respond proactively to changes in government policy."
He went on to point out, "Currently, Chungnam's carbon neutrality-related tasks are divided between the Department of Industry and Economy and the Bureau of Environment and Forestry, making coordination between departments difficult during policy implementation," and noted, "There are also practical issues such as a lack of consistency and speed in executing these tasks."
He further argued, "If the central government establishes the Ministry of Climate and Energy, Chungnam Province should also integrate or establish relevant departments to enhance the consistency and momentum of its work."
He also stressed, "Chungnam is at the center of future growth engines such as solar and wind power, as well as the hydrogen industry, making carbon neutrality and energy transition policies key tasks for regional development."
Gu concluded, "Through organizational restructuring, we can secure consistency and speed in policy implementation and respond effectively to the needs of residents and industry," emphasizing, "For the health of our residents and a sustainable environment for future generations, Chungnam Province must take the lead in responding to policy changes."
