Academic Conference Commemorating the Publication of the English Translation
154th Anniversary Memorial Ceremony Held
Yeongdeok County in North Gyeongsang Province held an academic conference commemorating the publication of the English translation of the 1871 Yeonghae Donghak Revolution and the 154th anniversary memorial ceremony at the Yeongdeok Intangible Cultural Heritage Training Center on June 20 and 21, in order to reflect on the historical significance of the 1871 Yeonghae Donghak Revolution and reinterpret it from a modern perspective.

The academic conference, held under the theme "Reinterpreting the 1871 Yeonghae Donghak Revolution and Future Directions," brought together experts from various fields in Korea to offer in-depth examinations of the essence and ideology of Yeonghae Donghak, as well as its status in local history, based on the newly translated editions of "Gyonam Gongjeok" and "Yeonghae Bujok Byeonmun Chuk."
The following day, the 154th anniversary memorial ceremony was held in a solemn atmosphere, featuring memorial speeches by distinguished guests, floral tributes, and commemorative performances.
Kwon Daecheon, chairperson of the Yeonghae Donghak Revolution Memorial Project Association, stated, "We hope that this academic conference and memorial ceremony will serve as an opportunity to redefine the historical status of Yeonghae Donghak, while also enhancing the region's identity and sense of community."
Kim Gwangyeol, governor of Yeongdeok County, said, "The 1871 Yeonghae Donghak Revolution was a cradle of Korean democracy, widely promoting human dignity and serving as a catalyst for the people to emerge at the center of history. We will spare no effort to carry on and spread the spirit and values of the Yeonghae Donghak Revolution, so that the history embodying the spirit of independence of local residents will not be forgotten."
