On June 23, Seogu District in Gwangju held a membership ceremony for Song Sunhee, a housing manager who has long practiced acts of sharing, as she joined 'Seogu Honors.'
According to Seogu on June 24, Song once endured difficult times as a recipient of basic livelihood benefits due to disability and poverty, saving every drop of tap water and surviving on a single meal a day.
However, one day while continuing her studies without giving up on her dreams, a small LED lamp gifted by a welfare official to ease her tired eyes changed her life. After earning her certification and becoming self-reliant as a housing manager, Song was once inspired by seeing a person with a brain lesion disability who was bedridden, thinking, "How wonderful would it be if I could become someone's hope?"
Since then, she has been living a life of sharing 'a precious meal' by donating 300 boxes of cup noodles, 200 trays of eggs, and several million won in cash every year for over 10 years to local welfare centers and administrative welfare centers near her neighborhood. Song's quiet yet profound acts of generosity, willingly using her hard-earned money to help neighbors in greater need, have left a deep impression.
Kim Ikang, Mayor of Seogu, said, "Song Sunhee's sharing goes beyond simple donations; it is a story of sincerity and recovery directed toward people," and added, "I expect that the steps of this 'wealthy at heart' individual, moving from despair to hope and then to sharing, will spread positive influence throughout our society."
Meanwhile, Seogu Honors is a group of major donors who have contributed over 30 million won. It is the nation’s first donor community led by a local government, established in November last year. To date, 83 members have donated a total of over 2.9 billion won, playing a pivotal role in realizing 'Zero Welfare Blind Spots, Seogu?a Good City Where All 12 Months Are Happy.'
