South Jeolla Province's Gokseong County announced on the 23rd that Gokseong Melon, the county's representative agricultural and specialty product produced at the Gokseong Nonghyup Agricultural Products Distribution Center and Gokseong Melon Co., Ltd., was shipped overseas for the first time this year on the 20th as part of the 2025 harvest.
On the 20th, Gokseong County held the "2025 Gokseong Melon First Export Loading Ceremony" at the Gokseong Nonghyup Agricultural Products Distribution Center (APC), marking the start of its full-scale entry into the global market. The export volume consists of 800 boxes of 8kg each, totaling 6.5 tons, and will be shipped in a 20-foot refrigerated container to Singapore via Busan Port.
About 30 people attended the ceremony, including members of the Gokseong Nonghyup, the National Agricultural Cooperative Federation, the Gokseong County Council, and officials from the county government. They celebrated the achievement of melon exports and shared expectations for expanding the international competitiveness of local agriculture. The county plans to use this export as a stepping stone to expand its sales channels not only to Singapore but also to various overseas markets.
Gokseong is a region with optimal climate and geographical conditions for melon cultivation, featuring large temperature differences between day and night, abundant sunlight, and high organic matter content in the soil, resulting in superior sweetness and quality. Gokseong Melon has already established itself as a premium fruit in the domestic market and continues to be recognized for its quality in overseas markets as well.
The county has continuously expanded its distribution and logistics infrastructure to foster melons as a luxury brand, including establishing a joint grading system and providing support for packaging and logistics costs. In particular, in 2022, Gokseong Melon achieved the milestone of being the first melon crop in the country to be registered under the geographical indication system, thereby securing its credibility for quality.
A county official emphasized, "Gokseong Melon is a premium fruit nurtured by nature, brought to the world through the dedication of our farmers and the support of our administration," adding, "We will continue our efforts to expand exports, not only to ensure stable income for farmers but also to revitalize the local economy."
