Hyungmi Kim of Gwangju Seo-gu Council Calls for Support of Herpes Zoster Vaccination

Expansion of Support Scope for Herpes Zoster Vaccines

On June 20, Assemblywoman Hyungmi Kim of the Gwangju Seo-gu Council saw her proposed amendment to the "Ordinance on Support for Herpes Zoster Vaccination" passed by the Planning and General Affairs Committee during the 331st regular session.

According to the Seo-gu Council on June 23, the key point of this amendment is the expansion of support for herpes zoster vaccines, which previously allowed only a single vaccination under the existing ordinance. The revised ordinance will now allow residents to choose both the type of vaccine and the number of doses.

This change is expected to enable vulnerable groups, such as immunocompromised individuals, to select the vaccine that best suits their needs, thereby making vaccination safer and more effective.

Currently, there are two types of herpes zoster vaccines available: the live vaccine (administered as a single dose) and the inactivated vaccine (administered as two doses). The inactivated vaccine, in particular, has the advantage of being suitable for immunocompromised individuals.

Assemblywoman Kim stated, "According to domestic research, the burden of herpes zoster disease is increasing every year, and the importance of vaccination is becoming even more pronounced in an aging society. I hope that this ordinance amendment will provide tangible benefits for Seo-gu residents to enjoy healthier lives."
