Incheon City has launched an initiative to eradicate illegal taxi activities around 'Inspire Arena,' a multi-resort performance venue located in Yeongjongdo, Jung-gu.
On June 21, the city announced on June 23 that it had conducted a joint guidance and crackdown operation with Jung-gu District and Jungbu Police Station on major roads and around taxi stands near Inspire Arena.
This crackdown focused on taxis that engaged in illegal practices such as demanding excessive fares from passengers, including foreigners, soliciting passengers, and not using the meter.
Yeongjongdo, where Inspire Arena has established itself as a K-pop performance hotspot, is designated as the 'Incheon International Airport Taxi Joint Business Zone.' This allows taxis registered not only in Incheon but also in certain areas of Seoul and Gyeonggi Province (Goyang, Gimpo, Bucheon, and Gwangmyeong) to operate in the area.
Prior to the crackdown, the city sent official letters not only to Incheon’s corporate and individual taxi associations, but also to Seoul and Gyeonggi Province, requesting that they work to prevent illegal activities by their affiliated taxis. In addition, banners in both Korean and English were installed near the performance venue to encourage victims of illegal taxi activities to actively report incidents to the relevant local government.
An official from Incheon City stated, "We plan to continue these crackdowns rather than making them a one-time effort," and added, "We will continue to seek cooperation from Seoul and Gyeonggi Province so that citizens and tourists can use taxis with peace of mind."
