According to Newsweek on June 22 (local time), progressive Senator Bernie Sanders (Independent) posted a video on X (formerly Twitter) the previous day. The footage was taken during a large rally in Tulsa, Oklahoma, as part of his "Fighting Oligarchy Tour."
In the 1-minute and 13-second video, Senator Sanders is visibly shocked upon hearing the news of the U.S. airstrike on Iran's nuclear facilities. While reading President Trump's statement, he momentarily lost his words, then shook his head in disbelief, displaying a bewildered reaction.
Immediately afterward, loud boos erupted from the audience, followed by chants of "No more war." Senator Sanders nodded in agreement and responded, "I agree."
Senator Sanders emphasized, "What I just heard is not just news. This is a blatant violation of the Constitution," adding, "The only institution in this country authorized to approve war is the United States Congress. The President does not have that authority."
The video has garnered approximately 5.82 million views and received over 100,000 'likes.'
Sanders told Newsweek, "The American people were lied to about Vietnam and Iraq, and the results were tragic," adding, "Now, once again, we are being lied to. We cannot allow history to repeat itself."
On the afternoon of June 21 (U.S. Eastern Time), the United States launched attacks on three Iranian nuclear facilities: Fordow, Natanz, and Isfahan. Immediately after the strikes, President Trump stated, "We have completed a very successful attack on Iran's three nuclear facilities?Fordow, Natanz, and Isfahan," declaring, "Fordow is finished."
Within the U.S. political sphere, there are concerns that this attack could escalate into war. Some members of both the Democratic and Republican parties are criticizing the President's unilateral military action as a violation of the U.S. Constitution. Previously, Republican Representative Thomas Massie and Democratic Representative Ro Khanna introduced a War Powers Resolution requiring the President to obtain congressional approval before launching military action against Iran.
However, the passage of the War Powers Resolution appears unlikely. Newsweek reported, "Currently, both chambers are controlled by the Republican Party, so the outlook for passage is not bright."
