The 47th ISO/IEC JTC 1/SC 29 Plenary Session to Be Held in Daejeon
Korea Expected to Secure Leadership in Next-Generation Media Standards
Including AI-Based Codecs and the Metaverse
A meeting to discuss the international standardization of various next-generation technologies based on artificial intelligence (AI) will be held in Korea.
The National Radio Research Agency under the Ministry of Science and ICT announced on June 23 that it will host the 47th International Standardization Meeting on Multimedia Coding (ISO/IEC JTC 1/SC 29) at the Daejeon Convention Center from June 26 to July 6.
At this meeting, in-depth discussions will be held on standards for next-generation broadcasting and content technologies. Approximately 600 experts from about 30 member countries of the subcommittee (ISO/IEC JTC 1/SC 29), which was jointly established by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), as well as global companies such as Samsung Electronics, LG Electronics, Apple, and Google, are expected to attend. In particular, a request for proposals regarding standard technologies for next-generation video codecs is also scheduled to be discussed, drawing significant attention from related industries.
During the meeting period, not only the JTC 1/SC 29 plenary session but also meetings of its subgroups?JPEG (still image coding), MPEG (video coding), and JVET (Joint Video Experts Team)?will be held concurrently.
At the JTC 1/SC 29 plenary session, there will be in-depth standardization discussions on a variety of AI-based next-generation technologies. These include technologies for introducing neural network (NN) techniques into video compression, 'Video Coding for Machines (VCM)' optimized for video analysis in autonomous vehicles, and compression technologies for three-dimensional point cloud data that form the foundation of metaverse environments.
In Korea, about 150 experts from industry, academia, and research institutes?including Samsung Electronics, LG Electronics, and the Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute of Korea?are leading standardization activities. Korean experts are serving as conveners in the MPEG Systems Working Group (WG 3, led by Lim Youngkwon of Samsung Electronics) and the Advisory Group for communication between MPEG working groups (AG 3, led by Kim Kyuhun of Kyung Hee University) under JTC 1/SC 29.
Jung Changrim, Director of the National Radio Research Agency, stated, "This international standardization meeting will serve as an opportunity for Korea to secure leadership in standardizing core technologies for the AI and metaverse era," adding, "We will actively support the development of standards so that domestic companies can take the lead in next-generation media technologies and enter the global market."
