Court: "No Remorse Despite Repeated Punishments"
A man in his 60s, who has been in and out of prison for over 30 years due to theft crimes, has once again been sentenced to prison for theft charges.
On June 23, the Jeonju District Court Criminal Division 3-1, presided over by Chief Judge Park Hyuni, announced that it had dismissed the appeal of Mr. A (60), who was indicted on charges of violating the Act on the Aggravated Punishment of Specific Crimes (theft), and upheld the original sentence of two years in prison.
Mr. A was indicted for stealing cash, bankbooks, wallets, bags, luxury slippers, and other items worth several million won from company offices and accommodations in the Chungnam and Jeonbuk regions between August 7 and 12, 2024.
He was also found to have stolen items of little value, such as a voluntary police ID card and a patrol vest, from an association office in Gochang County.
Mr. A committed these thefts only a month after being released from prison, where he had served a one-year sentence for the same charges. It is reported that he has served nearly ten years in prison, having been sentenced to prison seven times for repeated thefts over more than 30 years.
The court of first instance handed down a prison sentence, considering that he committed the crime again during the repeat offender period. However, Mr. A appealed, claiming that the punishment was too severe.
The appellate court stated, "The defendant has shown no remorse or willingness to reform despite repeated punishments," and pointed out, "This case involves breaking into others' offices and stealing valuables, and the nature of the crime is also serious given the method of the offense."
