Gangseo District to Install Elevator on 20-Degree Steep Alley in Seoul

A steep and difficult-to-climb slope will be transformed into a comfortable pathway. On June 23, Gangseo District in Seoul announced that it will install accessibility facilities, including an inclined elevator, on 35 Gomdallaero-gil in Hwagok-dong.

The area around 35 Gomdallaero-gil is a highland, low-rise residential neighborhood with many steep staircases, making it difficult to get around on foot. The section from 461-9 to 461-11 Hwagok-dong features a steep staircase that is 48 meters long, 4.5 meters wide, and has a slope of 20 degrees. A 20-degree incline is extremely challenging for elderly people, as well as for those using strollers or wheelchairs.

This area was selected as a priority site under the Seoul Metropolitan Government's "Accessibility Facility Installation Project for Mobility-Impaired Residents in Highland Areas." Accordingly, the total project cost of 4 billion won will be fully funded by the Seoul Metropolitan Government.

The district office plans to begin detailed design and construction in January next year, after Seoul completes the feasibility study and basic planning by November this year. Taking into account the characteristics of the area, the district will review and introduce the optimal accessibility solution among several options, such as vertical or inclined elevators and monorails. The goal is to complete the project by December 2027. The district also plans to improve access to Kkachisan Station by connecting the new facilities with local village buses.

Jin Kyohun, mayor of Gangseo District, stated, "We plan to assess the overall situation throughout the district and set priorities for the systematic implementation of such projects in the future." He added, "We will actively consider securing both national and municipal funding and do our utmost to develop policies that enhance walking convenience for mobility-impaired residents and improve the quality of life for all residents."
