Action Taken Ahead of Detention Expiry at the End of This Month

The special prosecutor team led by Eunseok Cho, which is investigating charges of insurrection and treason in connection with former President Yoon Sukyeol's December 3 Martial Law, has identified additional allegations involving military officials, including former Defense Security Command chief Yeo Inhyeong, and has forwarded related materials to the military prosecution.

On June 22, the special prosecutor for insurrection announced to the media, "While investigating after receiving the case records, we determined that a prompt review of the disposition regarding former Commander Yeo Inhyeong, who is currently on trial in the military court, was necessary. Accordingly, we sent the materials to the military prosecution today and are currently consulting on matters such as indictment, in accordance with Article 6, Paragraph 3 of the Special Prosecutor Act."

This measure appears to be aimed at preventing the release of former Commander Yeo and others, who are currently on trial at the Central Regional Military Court on charges of participating in the martial law, as their six-month detention period for the first trial is set to expire at the end of this month.

Former Commander Yeo was indicted and detained on December 31 of last year, on charges of performing key duties in the insurrection and of abuse of power to obstruct the exercise of rights, together with former Capital Defense Command chief Lee Jinwoo.

Earlier, the special prosecutor for insurrection applied additional charges, including obstruction of official duties by fraudulent means, and requested the issuance of a detention warrant from the court, in consideration of the fact that the first-trial detention period for former Defense Minister Kim Yonghyun is set to expire on June 26.
