Ulsan-type RISE... Expectations for Expanding International Cooperation
Ulsan City is opening a platform for communication between Korean and American experts to strengthen cooperation in the shipbuilding sector.
On June 23 at 3:00 p.m., the city will host the "Korea-US Shipbuilding Cooperation Experts Industry-Academia-Government Roundtable" in the main building's second-floor conference room as part of the "Korea-US Shipbuilding Engineering Education and Research Leaders Forum (KU-LeaderSHIP Forum)."
Attendees from the Ulsan side will include Vice Mayor for Economic Affairs Ahn Hyodae, as well as faculty from HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering, University of Ulsan, and Ulsan National Institute of Science and Technology. The US side will be represented by faculty from the United States Naval Academy, MIT, University of Michigan, Virginia Tech, Stevens Institute of Technology, and San Diego State University.
This exchange marks the first in-person meeting between professors from both countries. At the event, Lee Changuk, Director of the Ulsan Information Industry Promotion Agency, will present on "The Direction and Vision for the Development of the Shipbuilding Industry."
This will be followed by a Q&A session and a discussion on measures for Korea-US shipbuilding cooperation.
This event originates from efforts to identify practical ways for the RISE (Regional Innovation System & Education) framework to serve as a central driver of regional innovation. It aims to expand the core tasks of the "Ulsan-type RISE" system?such as nurturing local talent in key industries and building industry-academia-government cooperation among local universities?into the international arena.
RISE (Regional Innovation System & Education) refers to a university support system centered on regional innovation.
The city plans to use this roundtable as a starting point for establishing a practical foundation for Korea-US cooperation. Ulsan also intends to support the University of Ulsan and Ulsan National Institute of Science and Technology so they can grow into educational and research hubs for shipbuilding technology exchange and skilled workforce development based in the region.
In particular, the two universities plan to concretize their vision for development through the "Ulsan-type RISE" project, and to foster globally specialized talent in the shipbuilding industry through the establishment of state-of-the-art educational and research infrastructure and human resource capacity-building programs.
An official from Ulsan City stated, "We expect this roundtable to be a decisive turning point for Ulsan to emerge as a central city for strategic cooperation amid the global restructuring of the shipbuilding industry," adding, "We will complete a region-based global cooperation model that connects Ulsan's shipbuilding industry, technology, and education."
