Jeollanamdo Province announced on the 22nd that it will extend the application period for rice crop disaster insurance enrollment by one week, until the 27th.
Rice crop disaster insurance is a program designed to compensate farmers for crop damage caused by natural disasters such as typhoons and hail, thereby helping to stabilize farm management. With special riders, coverage can also be extended to damage caused by pests and diseases.
The covered pests and diseases include bacterial leaf blight, brown planthopper, rice blast, stripe disease, rice stripe virus, black bug, and bacterial grain rot, among others.
Jeollanamdo Province supports 90% of the disaster insurance premiums, reducing the financial burden on farmers. As of last year, the average insurance premium per hectare was about 540,000 won, with farmers only required to pay 10%, or 54,000 won. In particular, for organically certified eco-friendly farms, 100% of the insurance premium is subsidized.
Farmers wishing to enroll in rice disaster insurance can apply at their local agricultural cooperative (Nonghyup) by the 27th.
Powdered rice (garu-ssal), which is planted later than regular rice, can be insured separately until July 11.
Yoo Deokgyu, Director of the Food and Horticulture Division of Jeollanamdo Province, stated, "Every year, rice crops suffer repeated damage from natural disasters such as typhoons and heavy rain, making crop disaster insurance essential for safe farming. I urge farmers to pay close attention and make sure to enroll within the rice disaster insurance enrollment period."
Last year, the rice insurance enrollment rate in Jeollanamdo was the highest in the country at 79%, which is 15% higher than the national average of 64%. As a result, more than 36,000 rice farming households affected by brown planthopper and heavy rain received a total of 110.7 billion won in insurance payouts, providing significant support for management stability.
