"Formation of AI National Technology Task Force Led by AI Experts"
The National Policy Planning Committee, which serves as the transition team for President Lee Jaemyung, announced, "In about two weeks, we will report a detailed plan for implementing the pledge to make South Korea one of the top three global powers in artificial intelligence (AI)."
Lee Choonseok, the head of the Economic Division 2 responsible for the Ministry of Science and ICT, stated at a press briefing held at the annex of the Government Complex Seoul in Changseong-dong, Jongno-gu, Seoul, on June 22, that an "AI Task Force (TF)" has been established within the division to strengthen the competitiveness of the AI industry, which is the administration's top campaign pledge.
He explained, "AI is not only under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Science and ICT but is also spread across several ministries, including the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy and the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport," and added, "We have formed an AI National Technology TF centered on AI experts."
Lee Hanju, chairperson of the National Policy Planning Committee, also stated, "I understand that all relevant ministries are preparing to fulfill the AI-related pledges," and emphasized, "It is our responsibility to create effective national policy tasks, and this is just the beginning."
The National Policy Planning Committee plans to attend a special lecture by Ha Jungwoo, Chief of AI Future Planning at the Presidential Office, on June 23. The purpose is to hear Ha's insights on President Lee's philosophy and vision for making South Korea one of the top three AI powers and to incorporate them into policy.
