On the 22nd, Kang Yujeong, spokesperson for the Presidential Office, stated during a briefing at Yongsan, "At noon today, the Presidential Office convened an emergency security and economic situation assessment meeting, presided over by National Security Advisor Wi Seongrak, in response to the U.S. attack on Iran's nuclear facilities." She added, "During the meeting, we focused on accurately assessing the current situation and discussed in detail the impact of the U.S. attack on Iran's nuclear facilities, following the Israel-Iran conflict, on our national security and economy."
Kang emphasized, "Advisor Wi stressed that, above all, it is essential to protect the lives and safety of our citizens and to ensure a stable daily life." She continued, "He called for close communication and cooperation among relevant ministries to minimize the impact of the recent series of developments in the Middle East on the security and economic situation of the Korean Peninsula."
She added, "The Presidential Office will continue to closely monitor developments related to this incident and, considering the evolving situation, will lead additional discussions as necessary."
The meeting was held at noon in the National Security Council (NSC) subcommittee room. Attendees included Advisor Wi, the first, second, and third deputy national security advisors, the Chief of Economic Growth, the Director of National Affairs, and the Director of the National Crisis Management Center.
Meanwhile, this meeting was convened after U.S. President Donald Trump announced on the 21st (local time) that the United States had attacked three Iranian nuclear facilities. President Trump, in a national address at 10 p.m. local time from the White House, declared, "The military operation aimed at stopping the nuclear threat posed by the world's largest state sponsor of terrorism has succeeded," and added, "Iran's major nuclear enrichment facilities have been completely and thoroughly destroyed."
