Four assistant special prosecutors have been appointed to the team led by Special Prosecutor Lee Myunghyun, who is investigating the Chae Sangbyeong case.
On June 20, Special Prosecutor Lee announced via a press release, "Attorneys Ryu Gwansuk, Lee Geumgyu, Kim Sukjung, and Jeong Minyoung have been notified of their appointments as assistant special prosecutors for the Chae case."
Attorney Ryu graduated from Chungbuk High School and Korea University School of Law. After passing the military judicial officer appointment exam, he completed the Judicial Research and Training Institute as a member of the 9th class of military legal officers. He then served in the Ministry of National Defense Legal Affairs Office, as a senior prosecutor in the Prosecution Division, and as the chief prosecutor of the Special Investigation Team for Military Service Corruption, before opening his own law practice in 2003. In 2017, he served as a member of the Ministry of National Defense Committee for Clearing Military Irregularities, and in 2020, as a non-standing member of the Military Manpower Administration Alternative Service Review Committee.
Attorney Lee graduated from Gwangju Munseong High School and Chonnam National University with a degree in law. After passing the bar exam, he was appointed as a prosecutor in 2004. He served at the Pyeongtaek Branch of Suwon District Prosecutors' Office, Ulsan District Prosecutors' Office, Gwangju District Prosecutors' Office, and Seoul Western District Prosecutors' Office. Since 2013, he has practiced as a lawyer, and acted as a National Assembly impeachment agent in the impeachment trials of former President Park Geunhye in 2016 and former President Yoon Sukyeol in 2024.
Attorney Kim graduated from Seoul Hansung High School, Seoul National University with a degree in geography, and Korea University Law School. After passing the bar exam in 2012, he was appointed as a prosecutor. He served at Incheon District Prosecutors' Office and Ansan Branch of Suwon District Prosecutors' Office, then worked as a lawyer before serving as a prosecutor at the Corruption Investigation Office for High-ranking Officials from 2021 to 2023.
Attorney Jeong graduated from Seoul National University with a degree in anthropology and worked as a reporter for the Hankyoreh newspaper for two years. After passing the bar exam in 2013, she worked at the Public Interest Law Center of the People's Solidarity for Participatory Democracy and served as a special investigator on the special prosecutor team for the 2016 government corruption scandal. In 2021, during the Moon Jaein administration, she was appointed as a member of the Korea Communications Standards Commission, but former President Yoon Sukyeol dismissed her due to her previous experience as legal counsel for MBC in a lawsuit.
With the leadership appointments completed, the Chae Sangbyeong special prosecutor team is expected to accelerate the selection of dispatched prosecutors and investigators.
On this day, Special Prosecutor Lee met with Kim Sunho, acting Minister of National Defense (Vice Minister), to discuss the dispatch of investigative personnel. It is reported that Special Prosecutor Lee and Acting Minister Kim discussed the dispatch of military investigative personnel at this meeting. Special Prosecutor Lee plans to receive investigative personnel not only from the Corruption Investigation Office for High-ranking Officials, but also from the Marine Corps Investigation Unit, the Ministry of National Defense Investigation Headquarters, and the Prosecution Division, as needed.
The office of the Chae Sangbyeong special prosecutor is planned to be located on the 3rd to 5th floors of the Hwinmulgyeol Building in Seocho-gu, Seoul, near the Seoul Central District Prosecutors' Office and Court. However, as the related budget has not yet been received, the office is currently under a provisional contract, and the move-in date has not been determined.
