Recently, there has been a series of violent crimes targeting Korean nationals in the Philippines, including kidnappings and armed robberies. The Embassy of the Republic of Korea in the Philippines is seeking ways to cooperate with the highest-level law enforcement officials in the country.
According to the embassy on June 20 (local time), Ambassador Lee Sanghwa visited the Korean community in Angeles, Pampanga Province, Luzon Island in northern Philippines the previous day and held a safety meeting with representatives of the Korean residents. Jaime Santiago, Director of the Philippine National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) and one of the country's top law enforcement officials, also visited the area with a large Korean population to communicate directly with the community on site.
Ambassador Lee visited the area to assess the security situation in Angeles, which is one of the main areas with a large Korean population in the Philippines, and to explore measures to respond to violent crimes and other threats.
The participants discussed the current status of crimes targeting Koreans and preventive measures. They agreed to reduce security blind spots and strengthen the protection of Korean residents through practical cooperation between government agencies and the Korean community.
Ambassador Lee stated, "The safety of areas with a large Korean population is a responsibility of our government to protect our nationals," adding, "We will continue to work with the Philippine authorities to establish a more practical and sustainable protection system for the Korean community."
