Expansion of Private Access to AI Training Data
Need for Expedited Patent Examination in the AI Sector
On June 19, the National Policy Planning Committee, which serves as the transition team for the Lee Jaemyung administration, received a business report from the Korean Intellectual Property Office and emphasized the need for an active role in propelling South Korea into the ranks of the world’s top three artificial intelligence (AI) powers. The committee called for the preemptive acquisition of core technologies through patent analysis in the AI sector, the expansion of private sector access to AI training data, and the acceleration of patent examinations in the AI field.
Members of the Economic Division 2 of the National Policy Planning Committee stated, “Please help secure high value-added technologies by improving R&D efficiency through patent big data, and support the prompt acquisition of intellectual property rights.”
During the meeting, the Korean Intellectual Property Office presented plans to utilize patent big data in advanced technology fields, including AI, to support both government and private sector R&D and prevent technology leakage. The office also reported on measures to expand liquidity for economically valuable patents, support the acquisition of overseas patents, and improve tax policies to promote innovation incentives.
The office further announced its commitment to fulfilling President Lee’s campaign pledges, including the full-scale expansion of AI monitoring to block the increasingly sophisticated distribution of counterfeit goods.
