HD Hyundai Heavy Industries announced on the 20th that it recently delivered the 214-class diesel submarine 'Yoon Bonggil' to the Navy ahead of schedule after completing its overhaul at the company's Ulsan headquarters.
Submarine overhaul refers to comprehensive maintenance work carried out at a shipyard to keep the hull and equipment in optimal condition. The overhaul officially began on January 30 last year, and despite the high level of difficulty, it was completed 35 days before the contractual deadline.
In particular, HD Hyundai Heavy Industries demonstrated its outstanding technical capabilities and project management skills by successfully carrying out a total of approximately 1,620 maintenance tasks during the overhaul project, the largest number ever for such an operation. This included about 1,260 planned maintenance tasks and 360 unplanned additional maintenance tasks.
The Yoon Bonggil, built by HD Hyundai Heavy Industries, is the Republic of Korea Navy's fifth 214-class submarine. Since its delivery in June 2016, it has played a key role in strategic missions, proving its excellent performance during joint exercises with the US Navy and other operations.
Measuring 65.3 meters in length and 6.3 meters in width, with a submerged displacement of 1,800 tons, the submarine is equipped with an Air-Independent Propulsion (AIP) system that enables underwater operations for up to two weeks. It is also armed with domestically produced cruise missiles capable of precision strikes against key enemy facilities.
Joo Wonho, Head of Special Ship Business at HD Hyundai Heavy Industries, stated, "The early delivery of this overhaul is another example that proves HD Hyundai Heavy Industries' capabilities in submarine construction and maintenance, following the on-time delivery of the Shin Chaeho. We will continue to contribute to national security as a partner in safeguarding Korea's maritime interests."
Meanwhile, HD Hyundai Heavy Industries is accelerating the development of various export submarine models, including a 1,500-ton class submarine for export to Peru, as well as 2,300-ton and 800-ton class models, as part of its efforts to expand its presence in the global submarine market.
