Mayor Jeon Seong-su:
“We Will Make Seocho a More Livable City”
Seocho-gu, Seoul, will hold the “Yangjae-Naegok District 2040 Seocho-gu Urban Development Policy Forum” at 3 p.m. on June 25 at the Seocho Cultural and Arts Center. The purpose of this forum is to share the vision and core strategies of the “2040 Urban Development Master Plan” established by the district with local residents, and to discuss practical policy alternatives with more than 600 participants, including regional experts, related organizations, and members of the city and district councils.
Seocho-gu has established itself as a “livable city” based on its pleasant natural environment, including the Han River, Cheonggyesan Mountain, and Umyeonsan Mountain, its well-developed urban infrastructure, and high-quality cultural assets such as the Seoul Arts Center. Building on these foundations, the district has formulated the “2040 Urban Development Master Plan,” which looks ahead to the next 20 years for greater progress.
This plan includes 21 implementation strategies and 46 detailed tasks across six major sectors: urban space reorganization, industry and jobs, transportation, culture, and green spaces. Among these, the district will focus on ten key strategic projects that have the greatest impact and feasibility for full-scale implementation.
The Yangjae-Naegok District, where the first forum will be held, is an area concentrated with large-scale development projects and transportation infrastructure, such as the designation of the Yangjae AI Future Convergence Innovation Special Zone, the opening of GTX-C, the undergrounding of the Gyeongbu Expressway, the development of a mixed-use urban center around Yangjae Station, the construction of an urban high-tech logistics complex, and the redevelopment of the The-K Hotel site. As a result, it is attracting attention as a central axis of future change. Through this forum, the district aims to address residents’ questions about the development of the area and to reflect expert advice in order to further specify the implementation plans for each project.
The forum will begin with a presentation by Seocho-gu Mayor Jeon Seong-su on the “Yangjae-Naegok District 2040 Seocho-gu Urban Development Master Plan.” Based on his deep understanding of Seocho’s administration, Mayor Jeon will directly present the district’s future vision and development strategies. This will be followed by a second presentation from Park Chan-jin, head of the Seoul AI Hub Center, on the topic “The Future of Seocho as a Technological Innovation City Starting from the Yangjae AI Special Zone.” As an expert in the fields of industry and employment, Park will focus on strategies for fostering Seocho’s future industries and building an AI ecosystem.
Afterward, Professor Koo Ja-hoon of Hanyang University will serve as moderator, leading a panel discussion with experts from various fields: Lee Han-kyu, member of the Seocho Ombudsman Committee; Kim Byung-chae, CEO of Chaeum Landscape Architecture; Ra Do-sam, Senior Research Fellow at the Seoul Institute; Jang Young-ho, CEO of Mirae Engineering; and Kang Gap-saeng, transportation journalist at JoongAng Ilbo. The panel will discuss policies needed in practice in areas such as urban planning, transportation, parks and green spaces, and culture and the arts.
The “2040 Seocho-gu Urban Development Policy Forum” will begin with the Yangjae-Naegok District and will be held for the Seocho, Banpo, and Bangbae districts in the second half of the year. Even after the forums, the district will continue to develop concrete implementation measures reflecting the specific issues and characteristics of each area, with the aim of becoming a “sustainable city looking ahead to the next hundred years.”
Seocho-gu Mayor Jeon Seong-su stated, “This policy forum marks the first practical step for the 2040 Urban Development Master Plan and serves as the starting point for realizing customized urban policies for each area. We will do our utmost to communicate with residents and implement the plan without setbacks, so that Seocho becomes a sustainable and livable city.”
