Will Investigate the Truth Behind Yoon Suk Yeol Administration's Media Control
Reform Needed Under Lee Jinsook's Leadership at the KCC
The National Policy Planning Committee, which is serving as the transition committee for the Lee Jaemyung administration, criticized at the Korea Communications Commission (KCC) policy briefing held on June 20, stating, "The harm inflicted by the Yoon Suk Yeol administration on press freedom and democracy in the Republic of Korea is no less than an insurrection," and added, "They have thoroughly trampled on the public nature and public value of the media."
Hong Changnam, head of the Social Affairs Division 2 of the National Policy Planning Committee, said at the KCC policy briefing held at the Gwacheon Government Complex that day, "After receiving the policy report, it is clear that there is a lack of understanding of President Lee Jaemyung's pledges, and the content merely lists outdated tasks. I am greatly concerned from the outset that the KCC's policy report may be reaching a peak in this misguided situation."
He pointed out, "The Yoon Suk Yeol administration has appointed inappropriate figures who support the administration as presidents of public broadcasters, while not hesitating to impose sanctions and file complaints against media outlets critical of the government."
He added, "There are numerous tasks at hand, such as uncovering the truth behind the Yoon Suk Yeol administration's control of the media and restoring normalcy, strengthening the independence and public nature of the media, and promoting the media industry." He also emphasized, "The core of the media and communications pledges is to create a free and creative environment through media that is independent from power, and furthermore, to advance the field of media content."
Kim Hyun, head of the Broadcasting and Communications Division of the Economic Affairs Division 2 of the National Policy Planning Committee, also targeted KCC Chairperson Lee Jinsook at the meeting, stating, "Normalizing the KCC is more important than anything else, but while the KCC chairperson asks for a guarantee of tenure, there is no blueprint for how to reform the KCC."
Meanwhile, the KCC policy briefing that day was conducted by Kim Younggwan, acting secretary general, in place of Chairperson Lee Jinsook.
