On June 20, Severance Hospital was designated as Korea's first international education and training center for the Parapulse pulsed field ablation procedure.
Severance Hospital will now provide training on Parapulse pulsed field ablation, the most commonly used treatment for atrial fibrillation, to physicians worldwide.
Pulsed field ablation is a procedure in which a thin catheter is inserted into the heart to deliver a high-voltage pulse to the area causing atrial fibrillation, eliminating it in a single session. Compared to conventional treatments such as radiofrequency catheter ablation or cryoballoon ablation, this method is gaining attention as a safer alternative because the risk of severe complications, such as esophageal perforation or phrenic nerve injury, is significantly lower.
Going forward, Severance Hospital will educate physicians around the world on the Parapulse pulsed field ablation technique, which removes the target area by delivering a single strong current.
Earlier this year, Severance Hospital was also designated as an international education and training center for the Varipulse pulsed field ablation procedure. Varipulse removes the atrial fibrillation trigger area by delivering several low-voltage pulses over time.
To date, Severance Hospital has performed a total of 170 pulsed field ablation procedures, the highest number in Korea.
Professor Jung Boyoung, Director of the Arrhythmia Center at Severance Hospital, stated, "Severance Hospital, which was the first in Korea to introduce pulsed field ablation, has now been recognized as an international institution responsible for training in both Varipulse and Parapulse procedures. Through this, we aim to become a center that enhances the proficiency of medical professionals worldwide by providing education on various types of pulsed field ablation."
