"Personal Information Breach Due to SKT Hacking"...3,510 Apply for Collective Dispute Mediation

The Personal Information Dispute Mediation Committee (hereinafter referred to as the Dispute Mediation Committee) decided on June 19 to initiate two collective dispute mediation cases filed against SK Telecom. With this decision, the Dispute Mediation Committee has now received a total of four collective dispute mediation applications related to SK Telecom. The total number of participants has reached 3,510, and this figure is expected to increase further.

The Dispute Mediation Committee held a plenary meeting on this day and decided to initiate two collective dispute mediation cases filed against SK Telecom. However, the official announcement of the initiation and the additional recruitment of participants for these two cases will proceed immediately after the results of the investigation and disposition by the Personal Information Protection Commission are released.

To date, the Dispute Mediation Committee has received a total of four collective dispute mediation applications. The committee stated, "Since further applications for mediation may be submitted in the future, it is necessary to inform all potential participants of the overall application status and then conduct a unified recruitment process."

The mediation cases filed by Mr. Lim and 95 others on May 14, and by Mr. Kang and 50 others on June 10, have been initiated. The cases filed by Mr. Seo and 3,265 others on June 12, and by Mr. Kwon and 96 others, will be initiated once the required documentation is completed. As a result, the total number of mediation applicants has reached 3,510.

The Dispute Mediation Committee plans to initiate the remaining two cases, for which document supplementation is still in progress, as soon as the supplementation is completed. Additionally, since the Personal Information Protection Commission is currently investigating the personal information leak at SK Telecom, the committee has decided to temporarily suspend mediation until the commission's disposition is finalized.

Under the Personal Information Protection Act, the Personal Information Dispute Mediation Committee is established to reduce the cost and time required for relief from damages related to personal information, and to ensure that relief is provided fairly in accordance with procedures similar to those of a lawsuit.

Woo Jisook, acting chairperson of the Dispute Mediation Committee, stated, "We will make every necessary effort to protect the rights and interests of data subjects and provide effective relief through prompt and efficient mediation." Those wishing to apply for dispute mediation may do so through the committee's website, in writing, or by mail.
